Haunted Castles is a guide to the history, ghost legends and visiting tips for haunted castles around the world. How the stories are written
We try to keep documented history separate from legend. Each entry looks at where the castle is, what the historical record says happened there, and what visitors, staff and local storytellers say they have seen or heard. Ghost stories are told as folklore, not as proven fact. Where no record backs a tale up, we call it a legend or a rumor, and we know many of these stories have changed over the years.
We take care to be accurate, and we write with respect for the places and the people connected to them. Many castles were homes, prisons or battlegrounds, and real people lived and suffered there. Their stories deserve to be handled thoughtfully rather than as simple entertainment.
Visiting tips
If you plan to visit a castle, check ahead that it is open, and look at the opening hours, ticket rules and any guided tour times. Some castles are ruins, some are museums, and some are private homes or hotels. Follow the posted rules, stay on marked paths, keep out of closed areas, and be careful on uneven stairs and old stonework. Please leave everything as you found it so that these places last for future visitors.
